A very well-researched book, much more of a history than an actual novel since there is almost no story arc. Written from the perspective of a Mayan of noble birth and mission education, who was therefore able to serve as a translator between the Spanish and Mayan leaders and particiapte in some key events late in the transition to complete Spanish dominance. The plot is in essence that the old translator is in the late 16th century, explaining the history of the Yucatan to his granddaughter so that she can carry the story forward in her time. This book is based on many years of research by the author and covers both perspectives, naturally with a bias towards the Mayans but also noting that many of the problematic events came from one faction of Mayan clans joining with the Spanish to suppress another faction. It is also interesting in that most writings about the Conquistador period cover activities on the Mexican mainland with the Azteks, rather than about the Mayans who ranged from the Yucatan to Guatemala.
