Uniforms of the American Revolution

After decades of building Revolutionary-period models, Ben Brown finally wrote the book that he had wished he had available to him all along: a concise compendium of the organizations, uniforms, accoutrements and equipment of all the forces involved in the American Revolution.  It also contains an extensive bibliography.  Drawn from a wide range of sources, this is the must-have reference for the serious collector, hobbyist, re-enactor, historical interpreters or modeler who values the correct answer to questions such as the color and type of facings worn by a particular unit at a particular time.

For those just getting started on learning about the events of the period, the book also provides highly-readable summaries of the key phases of the war, with very useful maps, seen through the lens of regular shifts in units and equipment.

See Ben Brown’s author page on this site.

The book comes in multiple editions to suit varying needs and budgets:

  • A pocket-size (6×8″) edition of the book printed in black-and-white to make it more affordable. That version is in black-and-white, but we do provide the color pictures for your reference (although not as conveniently as having them right on the page you are reading).  Please note that the link is protected, out of respect to those who have purchased the book, in a way that should not prove too much of a hassle but won’t be accessible to people peering into the “show me a sample” pages online.  Using the 4th word in the definition of “Busby”, you may see the color illustrations at this link.
  • An electronic edition for those wishing to have it with them when traveling to shows, museums, etc., without having to carry yet another book
  • A full-size (8×10″) version that does include color versions of the illustrations
